Home and Hospital Teaching Service

The Home & Hospital Teaching Service (HHTS) in Darlington supports pupils who cannot attend their mainstream school due to medical needs.

These medical needs include:

  • Physical needs due to illness or injury;
  • Mental health needs such as anxious school phobia and depression;
  • Pregnant school girls from 29 weeks gestation.

There is a rigorous referral procedure to the HHTS provision:

  • For physical conditions the child’s mainstream school needs to complete a referral and send directly to the HHTS.
  • For mental health conditions, the child must have undergone a period of assessment with either the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), an Educational Psychologist (EP) or school counsellor.  The child’s mainstream school then needs to complete a referral to be taken to the Secondary Behaviour and Attendance Partnership Panel (SBAPP) along with the supporting assessment.
  • Many pregnant school girls choose to continue their education at their mainstream school.  The child’s mainstream school needs to inform the HHTS and complete a referral to the SBAPP, if the child would like support from the HHTS.

The majority of pupils are expected to attend the HHTS centre during their period of recovery/support.  The level of support and length of support vary according to each individuals condition.
